The Dukan Diet - The next Atkins . .

Unfortunately, Europeans have a lot to say when it comes to North American eating habits. When they think of us, they imagine huge porkers, spending most of our time on the couch devouring McDonald’s latest supersized meal. If it were up to them, we would probably be donning curly little pig tails and a snout. We, on the other hand, are always wondering how the French can drink copious amount of wine, white bread, and fatty meats and cheeses, yet still maintain an enviably slim figure.
Perhaps, Americans will finally learn the French secret to staying slim with the release of the Dukan diet. These diet books, which provide recipes and promises for a smaller waistline, will be released in North America sometime next month. There’s been a lot of hype about the new French equivalent of Dr. Atkins, Dr. Dukan. A 69 year old neurologist gone nutritionist, Mr. Dukan has become the go-to guy for quick weight-loss. He has already sold 3.5 million books. In fact, even Prince William’s mother-in-law to be is trying this diet to shed some extra pounds before her daughter’s wedding. If it’s good enough for the royals, it has to be good enough for Americans right?
The answer is: Not necessarily. This diet is basically a polished, improved version of the Atkins diet. With an emphasis on lower carbohydrate intake, the eating plan is likely to leave you craving a piece of cake or white bread just as much as any other high-protein diet. However, if you are able to permanently relinquish bad carbohydrates from your life, this diet could work.
Are Americans looking for some kind of savior to help them change their eating habits? With all the fad diets on the market, it seems we are looking for an easy fix that may never come. These diet books do have one thing right: they usually tell readers that eating right is a LIFESTYLE change. Although we all look for quick ways to shed some extra pounds, to stay slim, you DO have to make permanent changes. This doesn’t mean you have to give up all the foods you love. Look at the typical French lifestyle, pre-Dukan, pre Atkins, pre-South Beach. They were STILL skinnier than us. Their country is host to tons of great wine, pastries, bread, and meat. However, have you ever seen them eat a whole loaf of bread for lunch or dinner? What about a whole rump roast? Their portion sizes for one meal are probably 50% of our normal meals (if not less). Europeans have found a way to stop eating when they’re full. They don’t have to worry about eating that pound of food on their plate, because there never is a pound of food on their plates.
Dukan may have worked for some people, and it may work for MANY more people in the future. However, if you are looking for a way to lose weight and keep it off, you have to remember weight loss is NOT rocket science. You have to burn more calories or eat fewer calories to shed those extra, unwanted pounds. If you wait for any Dukan, Zone, or South Beach diet to change this fact of life, you may be waiting a very, very long time.
